The state of Idaho has a small but growing group of higher education institutions that offer distance learners the ability to seek a bachelor’s degree online. These programs allow students both in the state and around the country to earn a degree while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. The following are three examples of schools located in Idaho with online bachelor’s degree offerings:

Lewis-Clark State College

Lewis-Clark State College offers online bachelor’s degree programs in business administration, management, early childhood development, and RN to BSN. Lewis-Clark State delivers online instruction through its Blackboard Learn course management system. Textbooks may be purchased online from the LCSC bookstore. All other materials are available through Blackboard Learn or the Student Resources section of the distance learning website. Online courses at LCSC may require students to participate in synchronous discussions, and course work will be set on a deadline as online programs follow the same academic schedule as traditional courses.

Boise State University

  • Accreditor: Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)

Boise State University offers online bachelor’s degree completion programs in nursing and respiratory care. Completion programs are designed for students who have earned an associate degree or, in the case of nursing, have completed a registered nursing program. Boise State offers online courses through the Virtual Education Software, inc. (VESi). Course materials are delivered through VESi, including assignments, exams, lectures, and course texts. Two-credit courses require at least 40 hours; 3-credit courses require 60 hours.

Brigham Young University

  • Accreditor: Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)

Brigham Young University’s online Bachelor of General Studies program is designed for former BYU students who have fulfilled the 30-credit residency requirement on the Provo campus but still need course credit to complete their degree. Students may take online courses through BYU Independent Study, including coursework in accounting, anthropology, business administration, communications, English, history, and psychology. Up to 90 of the required 120 credits may be taken through BYU Independent Study, which offers over 550 online courses, from university-level to middle school, that may also be taken by interested students anywhere in the world.

Higher Education in Idaho

The Idaho State Board of Education sets the standards for Idaho’s public colleges and universities, including Boise State University, the College of Southern Idaho, the College of Western Idaho, Eastern Idaho Technical College, Idaho State University, Lewis-Clark State College, North Idaho College, and the University of Idaho. The Idaho State Board of Education has a Strategic Plan to increase educational access for individuals of all ages, abilities, and economic means in the region. The board also set plans to increase participation and retention rates, develop the educational environment, and ensure an effective and efficient system of delivery.

In addition, the state board organizes the Idaho Electronic Campus, which was established in 2000. The Idaho Electronic Campus offers tools for online learners and a directory of available online and distance education programs in the state. The site lists information specific to each institution, including admissions and registration policies, credit transfer, programs and courses delivered, financial aid, prerequisites, and tuition and fees. The electronic campus receives international visitors from countries including Australia, Brazil, France, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Poland, Spain, and Taiwan, as well as over 10,000 visitors from across the United States.
