Indiana boast many well-known brick-and-mortar colleges, but increasingly some of the schools within its borders are lengthening their reach beyond the American heartland through online education. These distance bachelor’s degree and associate degree programs meet students where they are, making education more convenient and often more affordable. The following represent three of the most popular online college programs in the state:

Indiana University

Indiana University Online awards dozens of degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including 11 bachelor’s degrees, and it is continually adding new majors. The online program at IU incorporates courses and education resources from all eight IU campuses. Students who are interested in earning an online bachelor’s degree from IU must complete the same requirements for admission as traditional students. Once admitted to the school, students will be assigned an academic advisor who will help them navigate the online learning system.

Indiana State University

Indiana State University’s online degree options are designed for adult students who prefer the flexibility of distance learning and have at least 60 college credit hours or a relevant associate degree. The school currently awards online bachelor’s degrees in accounting, adult career education, business administration, criminology and criminal justice, electronics engineering technology, human resource development, insurance and risk management, mechanical engineering technology, nursing LPN to BS, nursing RN to BS, and technology management. All courses are taught entirely online.

Ball State University

The Online and Distance Education program at Ball State is all-encompassing, awarding degrees at every level, include the doctoral. The school offers four online bachelor’s degree options: business administration, early childhood education, general studies, and nursing. The business administration program was designed for students who have completed some college or who have earned an associate degree and want to finish their four-year degree. The nursing program is a completion program for registered nurses who already have an associate degree. The general studies program is for students who want to complete a degree or who want to tailor their studies to their specific interests. All programs can be completed entirely online with some courses being taught live through Web conferencing.

Higher Education in Indiana

There are more than 50 colleges and universities located in the state of Indiana, and many of these schools offer distance learning options. The Indiana College Network (ICN) is one unique initiative in the state that gives students the opportunity to search and register for online courses at 15 different Indiana colleges and educational partners. The ICN includes both credit and noncredit courses and directs users to financial aid and admissions information for any of the site’s participating institutions.

The Indiana Department of Education has also set up an Office of eLearning to strengthen Indiana’s capacity for education innovation by fostering connections between online learning programs, schools, and learners. The state is also home to a number of online learning platforms for K-12 students, including Indiana Connections Academy and Indiana Online Academy.
