Do traditional universities offer online bachelor’s degrees?
Many brick-and-mortar universities offer online bachelor's degrees. With the advent of distance education, an increasing number of traditional schools are providing students with the option to take individual courses, entire degree programs and degree completion programs (for which students may transfer in credits from other institutions) via the Internet.
Online degrees offered by traditional universities are similar to the ones earned by their on-campus students. The course work is just as rigorous, and online students are expected to perform at the same level as those who take classes on site.
Students pursuing online bachelor's degrees can choose when and where they study and how they move through the courses in accordance with their particular learning styles. Professors who teach on campus, or who are otherwise affiliated with the institution, develop and administer the online classes. Lectures and course work are offered via videos, website applications, live chats and classroom forums. Sometimes, undergraduate students are required to participate in events or discussions that take place in person, but this is not common and would be a part of a specialized program.
Students enrolled in traditional universities who opt to take their courses online will benefit from the same level of quality in their course work as their on-campus counterparts and added flexibility in their educational experience. Because distance education is still relatively new, sometimes it can be difficult to convince people that an online degree is just as valuable as a traditional one. However, degrees earned online from brick-and-mortar schools are just as valid as ones completed in person. Sometimes a degree earned online is more beneficial than one attained in the usual way because the student has had the ability to learn in a way that suits him or her best.
Administrators at an increasing number of traditional universities are becoming aware of the benefits and flexibility of online education and in response, more brick-and-mortar schools are offering classes and degrees via the Web.
