Higher Education in Alabama

The Alabama Commission on Higher Education approves new institutions, including branch campuses, colleges, schools, divisions, and departments, as well as new academic programs, including online degree programs. The Commission also preps pre-college students for online education with a project called Alabama Online High School, which supports equal access to high school courses through distance learning educational services.

Alabama is also a member of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), a nonprofit compact that collaborates with 15 member states to improve education at every level. The commission has outlined a policy for distance education in Alabama, and supports the use of distance education by public higher education institutions in Alabama, such as the University of Alabama and the University of North Alabama. SREB launched the Electronic Campus in 1998 to provide online learning opportunities from accredited colleges and universities.
